Robert Wilson’s La Traviata light sculpture for Slamp arrives in New York for The 23rd Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit & Auction in July, 2016. Slamp works against the evocative background of Wilson’s ex chemical factory cum arts laboratory on Long Island for four days, preparing the La Traviata for the auction. The laboratory welcomes 100 young artists from around the world, ready to learn and master their craft under the watchful eye of the wildly successful and seasoned theatre producer. The Gala, held on July 30, goes off without a hitch; more than 400 guests dine under the cover of the luminous La Traviata, and Simon de Pury sells every single one, reaching the ambitious goal of 120,000$, destined for the multi-disciplinary center’s budding artists; the evening concludes with a live performance by Ja Rule, lasting well into the wee hours of the morning.
